The Importance Of Food Recycling

Not all food can be eaten! There will always be fruit or vegetable peelings and skins, waste tea and coffee grounds, egg shells and such which are wasted when simply thrown into the bin. It is estimated over 7 million tonnes of food is still wasted from UK households every year. The negative effect of this on the environment cannot be understated; if all UK households correctly recycled food waste, it would equate to removing one in every four cars from the road!

How Does It Work?

Amazingly, your food can be recycled into useful soil conditioners or bio fertilisers. Here is a little information on exactly how it’s achieved:

In Vessel Composting

In Vessel Composting is when food waste is mixed with garden waste, then shredded and composted in a tunnel for up to 4 weeks. High temperatures enable this to be carried out at quick rates, and enable the neutralisation of harmful organisms. Following this, the mixture is tended to for up to 3 months to maintain high quality levels, before the product is sold on as valuable soil conditioner.

Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic Digestion utilises micro-organisms known as methanogens. They produce methane gas, and are typically found in wetlands, and the digestive tracts of animals. They break down food waste in conditions where oxygen is absent, for example, in an enclosed tank. This creates and expels gases used to generate electricity, heat, and to transport fuels. Incredibly, they can also be used as a bio fertilisers, vital for farming or regenerating land.

What Food Can I Recycle?
